WELCOME TO SERBIA
Belgrade

Discover the truth behind the words of our wonderful Serbian writer Duško Radović, who wrote that “he who was lucky enough to wake up this morning in Belgrade shouldn’t ask for anything more in life. More than that would be immodest.” Serbia’s capital city, with more than 1.7 million inhabitants, lies on the confluence of the Sava and Danube rivers and at the crossroads of the Pannonian Plain and the Balkan Peninsula. Belgrade is a modern metropolis with a rich and vivid history.
The symbol of the capital city is Belgrade Fortress. Built on a white sandstone ridge above the confluence of our two great rivers, it has been destroyed and rebuilt repeatedly over the centuries. Despite this, it continues to defy time and hide numerous legends. If you truly wish to get to know Belgrade, start here.
Our French and European colleagues may be intrigued to hear that Montmartre in Paris is often considered a sister neighbourhood to Skadarlija in Belgrade. We invite you to join us after the opening ceremony, to see if you can discover why!
Listed by Lonely Planet as the No. 1 party city in the world, Belgrade offers an array of nightlife, from a relaxing beer with old colleagues or new friends, to glamorous parties and wild celebrations. We hope you enjoy your stay in our beautiful capital city!
Novi Sad
Wander through the quintessential unity of the historical and the modern in the city of Novi Sad. The second largest city in Serbia, with over 300,000 inhabitants, Novi Sad lies on the banks of the Danube river and is close to the beautiful mountain, Fruška Gora.
Laid-back, relaxed, and surrounded by fertile plains on one side and a mountain and a river from the other, Novi Sad stands out as a true gem among Serbia’s cities. Also known as “the Serbian Athens” and “the Gibraltar of the Danube”, its architecture and spirit have been shaped by various nations throughout its history.
Novi Sad is a university centre and a city of youth. In fact, this trait earned the city two important titles in the 21st Century – the European Youth Capital 2019 and the European Capital of Culture 2022 – making Novi Sad one of the first cities outside the European Union to be given these accolades.

Perhaps unsurprisingly given its spirit of youth and culture, Novi Sad has been the home of the iconic EXIT Festival since 2000. The EXIT Festival is widely recognised as one of the biggest and best summer music festivals in Europe, attracting world-class musicians and thousands of attendees.
When the weather is nice, you can head to the Štrand, a 700-metre-long beach on the Danube. As this is very close to the main venue in Novi Sad for the ASSITEJ Artistic Gathering 2023, we hope you will all have an opportunity to visit!
